It is difficult to believe that our language has no unique word for second-person plural. Maybe it's not so hard to believe, since English is so damn irregular--the messy child's room of languages.
But we need this word when you're talking to more than one person and wish to be inclusive.
In the past we had:
-Ye, plural of thou.
And certain other English-speaking countries and areas have tried to bridge this gap:
-Youse (Australia, Scotland)
-Yinz (Pittsburgh)
-Ye (dialectical Hiberno-English)?
-You guys
But nothing sounds as good as "y'all."
In the South you hear it all the time. It sounds so homey, and friendly.
And it gets the job done.
It's time to use "y'all," y'all.
